The South Texas seizure was part of an ongoing Homeland Security Task Force operation.
The Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Houston Division announced that federal agents seized over 2,000 pounds of methamphetamine concealed in a freight shipment of cabbage this month. The seizure occurred at the South Texas port of McAllen as part of a Homeland Security Task Force operation along the Rio Grande Valley. Other agencies involved included Homeland Security Investigations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, and Texas DPS.
Associate Chief of Operations for DEA’s South Central Region Jonathan Pullen said that tractor-trailers carrying produce, particularly lettuce and blueberries, are regularly used by drug traffickers to try to smuggle opioids into the United States.
As part of President Trump’s policy to combat opioid trafficking, U.S. Southern Command has also continued to target drug-running vessels in the Caribbean and Central America.
